One Iowa Executive Director – Resignation Update
Message from Executive Director Courtney Reyes:
I write this message with a heart full of mixed emotions as I announce my decision to resign as Executive Director of One Iowa and One Iowa Action. After five incredible years, it is time for new leadership to step forward and expand the vital work of improving the lives of LGBTQ+ Iowans. As an organization, we are ready for fresh ideas to lead us into the future.
During my tenure, my motivation has been rooted in continuing the legacy of our founder, Sharon Malheiro, who established One Iowa over 15 years ago to champion marriage equality. Our goals differ today, but the fight remains to protect LGBTQ+ rights. I am incredibly proud of the resilience and sustainability that has been built around that legacy.
Seven years ago, I joined One Iowa as a part-time office assistant, newly out and wide-eyed. Fresh off of staying at home with my two kids, I found a community worth fighting for. The lessons I’ve learned from many of you have carried me throughout my time as Executive Director.
Leading the One Iowa team has been one of the greatest honors. Working with this amazing group has brought so much joy into my daily life. We’ve shared countless moments of laughter and tears (and yes, most of those were mine.) It is tough to stay soft when you are under attack, but we kept showing up for each other and for our community.
My journey through advocacy and leadership has been a rollercoaster of intense joy and heartbreak, requiring me to carry an unshakeable weight. Now is the perfect time for me to take a step back, spend more time with my family, wander around my garden, and try to get my shoulders to relax after five legislative sessions.
To ensure a seamless transition, I will remain in my role until the board appoints a new Executive Director. In the meantime, we will continue to make Iowa a place where LGBTQ+ Iowans can grow and thrive, even when that seems out of reach.
As I look toward the end of my time with One Iowa, I hope you’ll join me one last time at the 15th Annual Gala on June 14th! We are planning a fantastic night of celebration, and I can’t wait to see you there. Get your tickets now!
In solidarity,
Courtney Reyes
Message from the One Iowa Board:
As Board President for the last three years, I have worked closely with Courtney and have seen her enthusiasm, hard work, and commitment to our mission first-hand. She was (and will continue to be) a champion for LGBTQ+ equality. I know I’m not alone when I say we are very sorry to see her go, and she will be missed!
Courtney has been gracious enough to agree to stay on for the next several months to support the transition. She looks forward to spending more time at home with her family.
One Iowa and One Iowa Action remain committed to serving the needs of LGBTQ+ Iowans. Over the next few weeks, our boards will strategize on our path forward. We anticipate releasing more details by June 1 on our website and socials about our search for our next Executive Director to drive our bold vision and fight for equality.
Questions regarding the transition or our search may be directed to Jeremy Weiss, Board Chair, at jeremy@oneiowa.org.
Thank you, Courtney, for your dedication to this organization and the individuals your work has touched across Iowa and beyond.
Jeremy Weiss
