Title: Development Director

One Iowa is looking for an engaged self-starter to join us as Development Director.  The individual must have a passion for the mission of One Iowa and the constituents we serve.  The position is responsible for the planning and implementing a program to identify, cultivate and solicit donors who have the ability to make major annual gifts, special project gifts, grants, funding streams, and planned gifts directed to the mission of One Iowa.  Additionally, this role is responsible for ensuring the donor database is updated, fully utilized, and capable of providing real-time reports to assist with forecasting and pipeline management. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director to represent One Iowa in the donor community.

The Development Director will be responsible for:

  • Partner in the development and implementation of a communications plan to promote philanthropic support for One Iowa. This position will work closely with the ED and Communications Coordinator. 
  • Organize a cultivation program of annual and individual and major donors using a variety of methods including personal visits, involving other staff, administration, current donors, and friends. 
  • Utilize donor management system (EveryAction) to track digital donations, engage donors via email campaigns, and create digital giving campaigns on FB and Instagram.
  • Seek out grant opportunities and diversify funding streams.
  • Participate as a full member of One Iowa’s team in planning, organizing, and coordinating annual fundraising activities and events such as the annual Gala, conferences, etc. 
  • Creates a well-articulated case statement for private gift support based on funding priorities and develops and implements an annual plan to maximize private gift support.
  • Must operate best within a “sales team” structure, willing to prospect, resistant to rejection, and highly motivated to continuously drive toward goals.
  • Determines the best means to solicit major and planned gifts. Develops and executes strategies specifically suited for such donors and compatible with the defined case and the financial goals of One Iowa.
  • Develops lists of prospective major gift donors by researching One Iowa’s donor files. Sets priorities for visits and contacts based on this.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, cultivates strong relationships with potential donors by making visits to learn about their interests and then matching them to the appropriate One Iowa program, service, and/or needs.
  • Establishes and measures progress on annual work goals.
  • Maintains complete records of all prospect interactions.
  • In partnership with the Communication team, initiates recognition and gratitude correspondence (thank you cards, birthday wishes, get-well cards, etc.) with all donors and prospects as appropriate.
  • Directs donors to experts to answer any legal or tax questions.
  • Attends applicable training opportunities for continuing education.
  • Keeps abreast in the field through journals, media, professional seminars, and other activities.

Skills Required:

  • Experience and knowledge of effective development strategies. 
  • Growth mindset and resiliency- an understanding that things might not go perfectly and the ability to jump right up after and keep working. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of many backgrounds and various group sizes.
  • Strong self-motivation and the ability to manage and complete multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Prior experience in growing an organization’s donor base both in terms of contributing individuals, corporations, grants, and organizations and in annual dollars raised.
  • Experience in organizing, recording, and retrieving important data and facts, including web-based sources.
  • Basic understanding of, or interest in, laws and regulations regarding charitable giving.
  • Experience in developing and successfully implementing a major gift plan including the building of endowment funds as part of those plans.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend events is expected. 
  • Three to five years’ experience in charitable philanthropic work (including annual gifts experience) or sales/marketing background or significant volunteer work with non-profits during their fundraising programs and/or campaigns.

The Director of Development position is a full-time position with an annual salary range of $60,000 – $80,000. Paid time off and health, dental, and vision care are included in our hiring package. Because of COVID-19, One Iowa is a hybrid work environment. Our office space is located in West Des Moines. Our expectation is that employees work between 32-40 hours a week.
