2020 LGBTQ Legacy Leader Awards

Meet the trailblazers who have persevered, triumphed, guided others. These community leaders are shining examples of how a few can be positive influences for many. We, in partnership with DSM Magazine, are honored to showcase the 2020 LGBTQ Legacy Leader honorees as well as the One Iowa Leadership Institute class. Help us celebrate their achievements at this virtual event.

This year’s recipients of the LGBTQ Legacy Leader Award are:

Eileen Gebbie of Ames, pastor of Ames United Church of Christ and social justice advocate

Alexandra Gray of Des Moines, singer, peformer, and outspoken advocate for LGBTQ people of color

John Harper of Iowa City, retired professor and first openly gay cleric in the Episcopal Church of Iowa

Jan Jensen of Iowa City, celebrated athlete and Associate Head Basketball Coach at the Unversity of Iowa

Tracy Lewis of Des Moines, community leader, mentor, and contributor to countless LGBTQ and arts organizations

A separate honor, the LGBTQ Ally Award, goes to someone who is not LGBTQ but who has a record of defending the rights and dignity of all persons. This years LGBTQ Ally Award goes to John Forsyth of Des Moines, current chairman and CEO of Wellmark Inc. John helped Wellmark become one of the first organizations in Iowa to establish insurance benefits for same-sex couples in the early 1990s.
