One Iowa to Feature Des Moines Area News Professionals in Second Annual Local Celebrity Drag Brunch
One Iowa, a statewide LGBTQ organization, will host its 2nd Annual Local Celebrity Drag Brunch on Sunday, July 14 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at The Garden Nightclub in Des Moines. Des Moines area news professionals will face-off in a pageant-style competition – in full drag – after receiving mentorship from local drag performers. All event proceeds will support One Iowa’s work for LGBTQ Iowans.
“Drag is an essential pillar of the LGBTQ community’s history and culture,” One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel said. “This fundraising event is an opportunity to share how fun and empowering drag can be with a larger audience, plus promote Des Moines’ incredible local performers. We’re excited to see what this set of local celebrity contestants bring to the runway this year.”
After last year’s drag bunch sold out, One Iowa is expanding the event to two stages. On the main stage, the celebrity contestant competition will unfold live hosted by Miss Gay Des Moines USof A 2018 Mari Jane. The second exhibition stage show will feature appearances by contestants and local drag performers, hosted by Miss Gay Iowa USofA Newcomer 2016 Domita Sanchez.
The local celebrity contestants are:
Ashley Bohnenkamp – dsm Magazine, WriteBrain, and IA Magazine publisher
Lauren Donovan – KCCI Channel 8 reporter
Jerad Giottonini – WHO TV Channel 13 News reporter
Justin Surrency – WHO TV Channel 13 News reporter
Brunch will be served at 11 a.m., with Bubba catering brunch for main stage attendees and a continental breakfast for second stage attendees. The show will begin on both stages at noon.
