One Iowa’s 4th Annual LGBTQ Senior Summit to Focus on Addressing Isolation and Strengthening Connection

One Iowa, a statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) organization, will host its 4th Annual LGBTQ Senior Summit on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Grand View University Student Center. The summit runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.

This year’s summit theme is Connecting with Resources and People to Live Your Best Life, aiming to bring LGBTQ seniors, caregivers, and other senior service professionals together for a day of education and community.

“76 percent of LGBTQ adults are anxious about having ‘adequate family and/or social supports to rely on as they age’ according to 2018 AARP data,” One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel said. “That number is far too high, and that’s why we’re working with our LGBTQ Senior Advisory Council to focus on cultivating connection between individuals and resources at this year’s summit.”

“The fight to ensure older LGBTQ adults live safe and fulfilling lives as they age does not end here. The conversations and connections made at the summit provide a launching pad for community members and professionals alike to continue this important work after the event ends.”

Christopher MacLellan, Whole Care Network founder and subject of the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s 2015 Pulitzer Prize-nominated piece “In Sickness and In Health: A Couple’s Final Journey”, will present the event’s keynote address. 2018 Iowa Artist Fellow Julia Franklin will give a presentation and showcase her most recent works, inspired by a single box of her father’s possessions given to her years after his tragic death. To make sense of his suicide, she creates displays with his personal belongings, letters, and documents to examine what people conceal in order to protect and to begin conversations about mental illness and identity.
