One Iowa Urges Sen. Grassley to Reject Brett Kavanaugh’s Nomination to the Supreme Court

On Monday, July 9, President Trump nominated U.S. Appeals Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left after Justice Anthony Kennedy retired. One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel issued this statement following the nomination:

“President Trump’s clear disdain for an independent judiciary makes it crucial that the Senate confirm only a fair-minded constitutionalist who will keep the White House in check and protect the rights of LGBTQ people, people of color, women, and many others. “Kavanaugh does not meet that criteria, and in fact his record indicates he is quite the opposite. We urge Sen. Grassley to uphold his responsibility as Chair of the Judiciary Committee and not move forward with this nomination.”

The Family Research Council heavily promoted Kavanaugh in 2005 when he was initially nominated for the U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. Circuit. The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated the Family Research Council an anti-LGBTQ hate group, and the organization is an outspoken opponent of LGBTQ rights.
