One Iowa to Host First Local Celebrity Drag Brunch to Support LGBTQ Iowans
One Iowa, a statewide LGBTQ organization, will host its first Local Celebrity Drag Brunch on Saturday, July 14 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at The Garden Nightclub in Des Moines. Des Moines area public figures will face-off in a pageant-style competition – in full drag – after receiving mentorship from local drag performers. All event proceeds will support One Iowa’s work for LGBTQ Iowans.
“Drag is an essential pillar of the LGBTQ community’s history and culture,” One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel said. “This event is a fundraiser, yes, but it’s also an opportunity to share how fun and empowering drag can be with a larger audience and promote Des Moines’ incredible local performers. We’re excited to see what our contestants bring to the runway.”
Miss Gay Iowa USofA Newcomer 2016 Domita Sanchez and Miss Gay Des Moines USofA 2018 Mari Jane will host the event.
The local celebrity contestants are:
- Scott Siepker – Actor, writer, producer and filmmaker most famous for his Iowa Nice Guy series
- Liz Bennett – First out LGBTQ woman in the Iowa Legislature
- Bryce Smith – Openly gay owner of Adel Family Fun Center and chair of Dallas County Democrats
- Dionna Langford – Des Moines Public Schools board member and one of Fusion TV’s 30 women under 30 who will impact the 2016 presidential election
Bubba will cater brunch for attendees, which will be served at 11 a.m. The pageant will begin at noon.
