One Iowa to Host Rally Following Masterpiece SCOTUS Decision
One Iowa, a statewide LGBTQ organization, will host a rally tonight on the West Terrace at the Iowa State Capitol Building at 6 p.m. following the Supreme Court’s decision in favor of the baker in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.
One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel issued the following statement following the ruling’s release:
“The Court stated that public officials should not display bias against someone’s religious beliefs. We agree with that assessment. The Court attributes their decision to how the Colorado Civil Rights Commission conducted themselves during the investigation, not to whether or not business owners can violate anti-discrimination laws due to their religious beliefs.
Although the Court has limited the scope of this decision to this specific case, we know that those who want to create a constitutional right to discriminate will use today’s decision to try and undermine nondiscrimination protections in states like Iowa. They will try to open the door to mistreatment and discrimination against a broad array of Americans. We will not let that happen.
Tonight, we will take a stand with our community against discrimination. No one should be denied public accommodations, fired from their job, denied a place to live, or be otherwise discriminated against because of who they are.”
The following community leaders are confirmed to speak at tonight’s rally:
- Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel, One Iowa executive director
- David Sickelka, Urbandale United Church of Christ senior pastor
- Connie Ryan, Interfaith Alliance of Iowa executive director
- Sophia Stone, Transformations Iowa president
- A representative from the ACLU of Iowa
- Sen. Matt McCoy
This list of speakers is not final.
