One Iowa Launches New LGBTQ Leadership Institute Program

One Iowa, a statewide LGBTQ organization, launched the LGBTQ Leadership Institute at its 9th Annual Gala Celebration on Friday, April 13. This new leadership development program aims to equip future LGBTQ leaders with the tools and skills to succeed not only in the LGBTQ community, but in the broader community as well.

“I’m personally very excited about the LGBTQ Leadership Institute,” One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel said. “Trailblazers like Sen. Matt McCoy and One Iowa founder Sharon Malheiro inspired me to step up and lead. They and many others paved the way for future LGBTQ Iowans, fighting for many of the rights and freedoms our community enjoys today. With this program, One Iowa aims to help others blaze their own trail to become a face and voice for the LGBTQ community, inspiring others and creating a cycle of empowerment.”

“If more LGBTQ Iowans step up and lead in the broader community, the needle will continue moving closer to full equality. The LGBTQ Leadership Institute will help these brave leaders realize their full potential.”

One Iowa will choose 15 to 20 LGBTQ individuals to participate in the inaugural LGBTQ Leadership Institute class. The program is open to people of all ages with a strong emphasis on transgender individuals, people of color, and women. Through biweekly classes in the Des Moines area beginning in June, these individuals will learn about Iowa LGBTQ history, how to be an authentic leader, resilient leadership strategies, and receive individualized planning guidance.

More information about the LGBTQ Leadership Institute, including the application, can be found here. Applications close on May 15, and participants will be announced June 1.
