One Iowa North Scholarship Deadline Approaches
One Iowa North, a Mason City affiliate of the state’s leading lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) organization, will award the $1,000 Craig W. Hickok Memorial Scholarship this spring to a self-identified LGBTQ person or ally pursuing higher education. All applicants must be 17 years old as of April 15, but there is no upper age limit. Applicants must plan to attend or currently attend a post-secondary trade or educational institution. Applications must be postmarked or received by April 15.
The board of One Iowa North established the Craig W. Hickock Scholarship Fund to acknowledge Hickock’s lifelong commitment to inclusion, education, support and equality by creating safe, appropriate and individualized educational settings to meet student needs. Hickock was a passionate supporter of the arts, including the musical, theatrical and visual arts efforts of students. Hickock allied himself with multiple social justice causes including racial equality, women’s rights and support of the LGBTQ community.
“The Craig W. Hickok Memorial Scholarship helps the greater community learn more about the LGBTQ community and work toward creating safe and welcoming environments,” One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel said. “The award also helps empower LGBTQ students to continue their education, which positively impacts them and their community.”
Potential applicants will find more information and the scholarship application at the One Iowa North website.
