The Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Advisory Council Seeks Members

The Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission Mission is to advance justice, promote equality and ensure the protection of human rights for all people in Des Moines through investigation, education, advocacy and community engagement.

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Advisory Council will:

  • Provide assistance and advice to the Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission regarding discrimination against the LGBT communities with a focus on equal access to employment, housing, municipal practices and public accommodations.
  • Advocate for the civil rights of LGBT persons.
  • Educate the LGBT communities about the Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission.

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Advisory Council of the Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission will seek members who are active in the community and who possess demonstrated experience and knowledge in a variety of issues that may be advanced by the committee.  They may include:  youth issues, aging, AIDS/HIV, anti-bullying and violence, civil rights, gender identity, hate-crimes, bisexual visibility, faith-based advocacy, education, intersex and health issues. We seek to achieve diversity and representation.

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Advisory Council (“LGBTAC”) of the Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) seeks members to serve on the Commission’s newest committee.

The LGBTAC:

  • Provides assistance and advice to the Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission regarding discrimination against the LGBT communities with a focus on equal access to employment, housing, municipal practices and public accommodations.
  • Advocates for the civil rights of LGBT persons.
  • Educates the LGBT communities about the Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission.

MEMBERSHIP SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT

Successful applicants will receive their official notice of appointment by the Chair of the Des Moines Human & Civil Rights Commission in January 2017 with the official membership commencing at the first LGBTAC meeting in February 2017. (TBA)

Upon appointment new members are required to attend a new membership orientation and at least 8 scheduled LGBTAC meetings in 2017. Initial appointment is for one year.

Only applicants who reside in the City of Des Moines will be considered for appointment.
